River Forest

This is kind of a backward view of the painting River Forest. I did the pen and ink sketch next to the Maumee River (in Ohio) in July. I don't usually paint from my sketches, but I was ready to try. Typically I start a painting and find my way as I go. I'm in wonder of the painters who know what the end result will be; maybe with time I will too. I was surprised...actually horrified...at how this painting started. I was happy with my sketch and sure it would be a smooth transition to a painting. I agonized - really, there wasn't much calm progress - about it for a week. I can actually relate the finished painting to the sketch; in my mind there's a connection.
